Akron at 200: A Bicentennial History, book cover

The Bicentennial Commission of the City of Akron has announced the long-awaited release of a new 425-page publication, AKRON AT 200. The 28-chapter anthology is published by the University of Akron Press and sponsored by the City of Akron.

The hard cover book is listed at a sales price of $50. During the city’s week-long Bicentennial celebration, copies of the book will be available for sale at the Akron History Center at a discounted price of $35. Hours are as follows:

Wednesday, July 2, 10am – 2pm
Thursday, July 3, 10am – 2pm
Friday, July 4, 10am – 2pm
Saturday, July 5, 10am – 2pm

There are 26 authors, recruited for the project by Dave Lieberth, president of the Akron History Center and Executive Secretary of the Akron Bicentennial Commission. Lieberth served as an editor of the compilation along with Dr. Jon Miller, Director of the University of Akron Press.

The tradition of publishing new history books of Akron was established during Akron’s prior anniversaries in 1925, 1950, and 1975. The goal of the project was to assemble new accounts of topics that have never been published in previous histories, and to revisit topics that did not have the advantages we have today in researching historical people and events. AKRON AT 200 corrects many of the myths and legends that marked previous accounts of Indigenous people in the area and includes the first written history of Akron’s LGBTQ+ community.
